Developing Your Leadership Team

Leadership is valuable in every organization, but planning, effort, and development into growing the leaders of tomorrow can be of immense benefit to your business.

Often, day to day concerns get in the way of this goal. But as we are seeing now with current challenges everyone is facing, and the increased number of people working remotely, times like these show how team leadership is essential as business leaders look to get their teams ready to hit remote work head-on. Here are a few ways that we have found valuable in identifying and developing leaders in our organization:

Identify Promising Employees. Just like in many other industries, sometimes developing from within is more efficient, cost-effective and morale-boosting. Ask who on your team looks to be that of a budding leader. Oftentimes the first place to look is with employees who consistently demonstrate high performance and skill levels. But it is important to cast your net as wide as possible.  Look at both managers and employees who often work above and beyond their job responsibilities and have demonstrated leadership potential as a project team leader.

What Does Leadership Stand For? Leadership comes in many forms. As a result, a generic approach will not necessarily work for your business. Look at the big picture. Frame your leadership discussions around the purpose of the organization and how you are aiming to achieve it … all those meaningful hard discussions that build a stronger, sustainable future for the organization.”

Provide Growth Opportunities. Promoting a promising employee to lead a project team is a great way to observe that person’s leadership capabilities. It may even be worthwhile to develop a mentorship program that matches your top executives with high performing employees. These strategies can substantially increase the chances you will identify and develop the best candidates for your company’s future.

Allow Leaders to Make Important Decisions. To be an effective leader you have to make important decisions, and the only way someone can learn this is through experience. Let your team know that the individual you’ve chosen to lead a project has the authority to handle the particular challenges or issues that come along with that project, and he or she is empowered to make decisions to resolve the matter. Without informing your team, the leadership candidate may be perceived as ineffectual which could seriously undermine his or her potential leadership abilities.

Recognize Achievements, Grow From Failures. When a leadership candidate’s actions culminate in a success for the organization, recognize these successes to your organization! By celebrating these achievements it gives that individual credibility that helps cement his or her status as a future leader within their team and throughout the organization.

Additionally, if that individual’s contributions fail to produce the desired effect, redirect that energy and turn it into a positive by assessing what caused the issue and growing from that situation.

Encourage Networking. Networking is a key aspect in which prospective leaders grow. Especially when representing your organization. These individuals come to be seen as the “face” of your business, while at the same time accumulating valuable experience as someone to follow as they grow within the company.

While some leaders may be “born,” oftentimes leaders need to be identified and groomed throughout their careers. This has been especially effective for us as we look to find leaders throughout different parts of our organization, from our Office Staff, Hardwood Lumber Sales Teams, to our Sawmill Managers and Foresters. By identifying and developing from within it builds a stronger organization as a whole, that empowers leaders to tackle challenges (like the one we are all currently facing) head-on.
