Four Hardwoods For Flooring

four hardwoods for flooringWhen flooring manufacturers seek hardwood for flooring, what do they consistently ask for? Well, we find that red oak, white oak, hard maple and walnut are four of the most popular hardwood species we get request for!

This is probably because they are more durable and will last longer than other types of flooring materials. They are also easy to clean and maintain which has made them a popular choice for generations.

Here are a few points about each species you might find interesting.

Red Oak
Red oak is one of the most widely used species for flooring. It stains well, is easy to finish and can offer a unique look with its natural wide-grain patterns. Red Oak is also extremely workable and with a rating of 1,290 on the Janka scale, it strikes the perfect balance of hardness and workability.

White Oak
White oak is a beautiful, durable hardwood that is also perfect for flooring. It is slightly darker and more yellow than red oak, but it has a smoother grain and less graining overall. Some say this gives it a more modern look. White oak is also a bit harder than red oak on the Janka hardness scale, making it more resistant to dents and scratches.

Hard Maple
There are many reasons why manufacturers use hard maple for their solid hardwood flooring products. First, hard maple is one of the hardest woods available, (Janka rating of 1450), making it extremely durable and able to last for generations. It is also very dense, meaning that it will resist dents and scratches better than other species. It also has a smooth texture and a less prominent grain pattern, that when used in flooring seems to create a clean and modern look.

Walnut
We find manufacturers choose walnut, a.k.a.  American Walnut, Eastern Black Walnut, or American Black Walnut, for flooring for more decorative reasons. Walnut comes in a range of looks. From clean and bright to dark and dramatic, walnut can run the gamut and fit into just about any design.
