Does your company promote work-life balance

Many business leaders understand the importance of encouraging employees to find the right “work-life” balance. However, that is not always as easy as it sounds. At American Lumber, we have been focusing on a few best practices that we have found help foster a culture of “work-life” balance for our employees.  If you are interested in something similar, consider a few of these ideas:

  1. Propose employees to strive for integration, rather than balance: There are only so many hours in a day. The phrase “work-life” suggests that people somehow divide these activities down the middle and find a magical notion of “balance.” But in reality, it is not always that simple. Craig Guillot at Chief Executive notes, “Strive instead for integration, which “means simultaneously ranking priorities at the office and in the home.”
  2. Prioritize what is important for that day: It’s easy for people to feel that “everything is equally urgent and important.” Encourage employees to analyze the specific tasks that make up their day and determine if all of them are really necessary. Of course, if they are, do them. But still prioritize them and see which ones can be left for another day. Chances are you will find that some of them are not as critical as you might have first thought.
  3. Be serious about improving your delegation skills: Surely you have heard this many times before, but the point is worth repeating. Delegation has nothing to do with a one’s personal shortcomings. Sometimes delegation is worth viewing or acknowledging that no single individual can manage or supervise every task needed to run a successful business. So, find ways to ask other qualified individuals in your organization to help. You never know, you might even see additional team development benefits along the way.
  4. Befriend technology: Technology really can be your friend! There are plenty of digital tools on the market today that help people better integrate their work and personal lives. Find a few that work for you and use them.
  5. Eliminate waste in your day: Multiple walks to the water cooler, unnecessary hallway chats with co-workers, the constant checking for emails, Snapchats, Twitter messages, Facebook posts, or the numerous other forms of potential distractions, make a sincere effort to identify and eliminate the unnecessary time-wasting behaviors.  It can be a double-edged sword. The more you embrace integration and technology the more potential distractions you can create. The key is to limit the unnecessary ones and find ways to put time back in your day!

If you implement these or other best practices, be patient. Chances are they will not result in noticeable change overnight. However, if you stick with them you have a good chance of improving your “work-life” balance!
